menghafal?

'memorization is not a meaningful way of learning'. that is one of the things that i gained from today lesson.

i try to relate it with our daily life, or to be more specific, with our daily routine, and this includes praying. we say our prayer every single day, and at least 5 times a day. some of us may perform more. but how far do we really understand our prayer? we are trained since we we're small to memorize word by word and sentence by sentence, and not much emphasize was given to 'understanding what is the meaning' part.

i admit that i myself have to try really hard to understand and remember the meaning of what i recite. the major factor of this is because i have no any basic in Arabic language. started reciting the quran since i was small does not really help me to understand the language either.

because of this, it is rarely happen that we practice our recitation, although we may recite it every day. we recite our prayer, but without knowing the meaning, it would be just meaningless, although there are still good rewards waiting for us, insyaAllah..

apart from understanding the meaning of our prayer, it is also true that memorization does not really contribute to learning. it may be helpful during exams, but all the memorized information and knowledge would just dissapear after that (this is just from my personal experience). this is what will happen when the education system is based on examination.

i believe it is the understanding that really matter. when you understand the content of the knowledge, then it would be easier to apply and practice it in your life. when you understand by heart, the meaning will come naturally every time you recite the sentence.

wallahu'alam.
